A man with a history of violence in France has been arrested in Brussels, accused of attempting to run over four police officers with his car. The incident occurred Saturday morning in the Schaerbeek district of the Belgian capital.
The four police officers were conducting a check on a sidewalk near the North Station when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction suddenly accelerated towards them. The officers managed to avoid the impact at the last moment, but the assailant's car struck the police vehicle.
Fortunately, no police officers were physically injured. However, the prosecutor's office stated that all four officers were deeply shocked and would be unable to work for several days.
The suspect was immediately detained at the scene. Subsequent investigations revealed that he was already known to French authorities for acts of violence. The suspect's nationality was not disclosed.
The Belgian Minister of the Interior, Bernard Quintin, firmly condemned the incident. He declared that "the attack on our police officers is an attack on the entire state. Justice must now act with severity." He extended his support to the involved agents.
