Germany Sees Record 520,000 Overnight Stays From Indian Travellers in 2025
Germany has witnessed a surge in Indian visitors, recording more than 520,000 overnight stays between January and July 2025, according to the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) India. The impressive growth highlights India’s importance as one of Germany’s fastest-expanding tourism markets and positions the country among the top three European destinations for Indian travellers.
The rise reflects both leisure and business travel, demonstrating Germany’s wide-ranging appeal — from historic cities and cultural heritage to innovation hubs and natural landscapes.
A key driver behind this growth has been improved air connectivity. The number of flights between India and Germany increased 26% in 2024 compared to 2019, signaling a strong recovery in post-pandemic travel. This upward trend has continued into 2025, with arrivals between January and July growing by an additional 5.5% year-on-year.
The economic impact of Indian tourism has been substantial. In 2024, Indian travellers generated €1.1 billion in turnover, with average spending reaching €3,068 per trip, underscoring India’s status as a high-value market for Germany.
“India is, without a doubt, a crucial market for Destination Germany,” said Romit Theophilus, Director of Marketing & Sales at GNTO India. “The pace of recovery and growth we are seeing is extremely encouraging. Germany’s blend of historic charm, natural beauty, and vibrant culture clearly resonates with Indian travellers.”
Looking ahead, GNTO is planning a series of targeted campaigns to deepen engagement with the Indian market. These initiatives will feature Indian celebrities and influencers showcasing “hidden treasures” — lesser-known cultural sites, authentic local experiences, and natural attractions — designed to inspire deeper exploration beyond major cities like Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt.
With continued improvements in connectivity and strategic marketing, GNTO expects Germany to further strengthen its position as a preferred European destination for Indian travellers in the coming years.
