Global perspective crucial for advancing humanity in space, says professor Brian Cox
Space exploration and the development of space technologies demand a global outlook, according to Professor Brian Cox, the acclaimed astrophysicist recently appointed as the United Nations Champion for Space. Cox emphasized that these endeavors “require a global perspective,” compelling nations to collaborate in ways that transcend borders.
The UN Champion for Space role is designed to promote awareness of the transformative potential of space technologies in tackling global challenges, including climate change, disaster management, and sustainable development. Speaking to UN News, Cox highlighted the inherently international nature of space, noting that it “does not respect international borders, which is why you need organisations like the United Nations.” He added, “We have to operate in certain areas as a single planet; space is one of the best examples of that.”
The appointment, made by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) — the Vienna-based entity responsible for fostering international cooperation in the peaceful use and exploration of space — recognizes Cox’s ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in an accessible and engaging manner.
“Professor Cox has inspired millions around the world with his passion for science,” said Aarti Holla-Maini, Director of UNOOSA. “His commitment to public understanding of science and his belief in space’s potential to improve life on Earth align perfectly with our mission.”

The honorary role continues a UN tradition of appointing prominent individuals to draw attention to key initiatives and highlight priority issues. Past Champions for Space include astronaut Scott Kelly, appointed in 2016.
Reflecting on his new role, Cox said, “I’m proud and honoured to support the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in raising awareness of how space solutions can advance progress for us all. Space is not just about curiosity-driven exploration of the cosmos; it’s about creating a stronger and more sustainable global economy for everyone on Earth, and moving humanity forward, together.”
