Genoa sack Patrick Vieira after winless Serie A start
November 1 – Genoa have parted ways with head coach Patrick Vieira following a disastrous start to their Serie A campaign, which has left the club bottom of the table after nine matches without a win.
Vieira, the former France international midfielder, took charge of Genoa in November 2024 when the team sat 17th in the standings. He guided them to safety, finishing 13th last season, but this year’s poor form — three draws, six defeats, and just four goals scored — has prompted swift action from the club’s management.
“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the first team... the technical leadership of the first team has been entrusted on an interim basis to Roberto Murgita, assisted by Domenico Criscito,” the club said in an official statement released on Saturday.
Under Vieira’s tenure, Genoa struggled to find attacking rhythm and defensive stability, failing to register a single victory in the opening two months of the 2025–26 season. The team now sits two points adrift of safety.
Interim coach Roberto Murgita, who has previously served as an assistant at the club, will lead Genoa when they travel to Sassuolo on Monday in a crucial fixture that could determine the direction of their survival campaign.
The Genoa hierarchy is expected to begin searching immediately for a permanent successor as they look to stabilize results before the midseason break.
