Indonesia and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening a strategic partnership in sustainable development and climate change mitigation through the signing of two bilateral agreements in Brazil. These agreements were secured on the sidelines of the Belém Leaders Summit, a preparatory meeting held ahead of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).

Key Agreements Signed

The first agreement was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Indonesian Environment Minister and the British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The MoU outlines an expanded cooperation across several critical areas:

  • Expanding efforts in climate mitigation and adaptation.

  • Strengthening carbon management.

  • Promoting sustainable, low-carbon development.

The Indonesian minister stated that the agreement underscores the nation’s commitment to climate change mitigation and reinforces its environmental diplomacy at the global level.

The second agreement was a Letter of Intent (LoI) on environmental cooperation, signed between the Environment Ministry and a foundation connected to The Prince and Princess of Wales.

The LoI establishes new initiatives to enhance collaboration on:

  • Involving the private and financial sectors.

  • Strengthening law enforcement cooperation.

  • Enhancing coordination on biodiversity protection and combating environmental crimes.

Officials stated that the LoI reflects the two nations' shared dedication to biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and the fight against illegal wildlife trade and other environmental offenses.

Indonesia’s delegation to the Belém Leaders Summit, held from November 6–7, included the President’s Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, the Environment Minister, and the Forestry Minister. The summit gathered world leaders to discuss global climate challenges and set the stage for the major discussions expected at COP30.
