HD Hyundai partners with Siemens to boost U.S. shipbuilding digital transformation
SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 1, 2025 — HD Hyundai has announced a strategic partnership with Germany’s Siemens to accelerate the digital transformation and modernization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
According to a statement released on Sunday, Nov. 2, the two companies recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on revitalizing U.S. shipbuilding through advanced technology and digital innovation.
The collaboration aims to enhance competitiveness by improving design quality, minimizing production risks, optimizing costs, and advancing data-driven shipbuilding processes. Both firms plan to introduce cutting-edge digital tools to automate design and production stages, streamline block assembly and installation, and strengthen process management across shipyards.
Beyond technology cooperation, HD Hyundai and Siemens will jointly launch professional training programs to foster skilled workers in shipbuilding. HD Hyundai plans to send instructors to more than 30 Siemens training centers across the United States, offering hands-on technical education. The company will also expand its academic partnerships with the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to create specialized curricula in engineering, digital design, and process automation.
Since 2023, the two firms have been co-developing a manufacturing innovation platform that integrates data from design to production within a unified digital ecosystem. This system allows virtual simulations of shipbuilding processes, significantly reducing trial and error and improving productivity.
The partnership is expected to accelerate the smart transformation of U.S. shipyards, boosting efficiency, quality, and global competitiveness.
“Maximizing production efficiency through digital and automation technologies is key to rebuilding the U.S. shipbuilding industry,” said Moon Sangmin, Head of Global Strategy at HD Hyundai. “By combining HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding expertise with Siemens’ digital capabilities, we aim to create new opportunities for the U.S. shipbuilding sector.”
HD Hyundai continues to strengthen its U.S. network as part of the Make American Shipbuilding Great Again (MASGA) initiative. The company has built strategic alliances with major industry players, including Huntington Ingalls Industries in naval shipbuilding and Edison Chouest Offshore in the commercial segment, while advancing workforce development programs in partnership with leading universities in both Korea and the United States.
