The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured Al-Fashir, the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in the Darfur region, marking a significant turning point in the country’s civil war. With this takeover, the RSF now controls more than a quarter of Sudan’s territory.

“The United States has actively engaged in efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the terrible conflict in Sudan,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Monday that its prosecutors are gathering evidence of alleged mass killings and sexual violence committed in Al-Fashir.

According to the U.N. Human Rights Office, hundreds of civilians and unarmed fighters may have been killed during the city’s fall. Witnesses reported that RSF fighters separated men from women and children before gunfire erupted. The RSF has denied targeting civilians.
